Moonlightshadow Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Hi, tonight my 07 Galaxy had the battery light come on. 5 minutes later the radio went off and Power Steering Malfunction light popped up seconds after the steering went very stiff and I almost crashed. The abs warning light came on. I limped it the mile or so home and now it's dead and won't turn over. A few minutes earlier I was doing 60mph on an unlit bypass in which case I would be in a waterlogged ditch around about now with my 1 year old baby. To say its scared the life out of me is an understatement. Any ideas what the problem is I'm presuming it is to do with my alternator or aux belt but wondered if it is a common problem. It has just had a service and mot a week ago and has done about 75k I replaced the battery less than 12 months ago. Thank you in advance for any replies. Quote
seatkid Posted December 14, 2013 Report Posted December 14, 2013 Recharge the battery, get it restarted then check for charging voltage of 14.3 volts at the battery when running.Likely culprit is the engine fuse/power box, check for signs of overheating/melting. If so then the thick cable from the alternator almost certainly has a faulty crimp. New cable or new crimp is required and a new box if its badly damaged. If not the above the a faulty alternator is the next suspect. Quote
SilverBeast Posted December 14, 2013 Report Posted December 14, 2013 This is an 07. I guess it's a MK3 not a MK1 or MK2. seatkids diagnosis and instructions still apply, but there may not be the engine fuse box. It is obviously an electrical failure. I believe your power steering pump is electric on the MK3, which explains why you lost power steering ceased operating. Glad you and car are unharmed. I suggest that if the battery warning light comes on again you stop immediately or proceed slowly with extreme caution as you now know what to expect. Quote

xavier Posted December 15, 2013 Report Posted December 15, 2013 and the poor chap's probably searching the mkIII board looking for the post he put on earlier. This happened to me in a cavalier, turned out to be a garage had connected the earth lead to the alternator incorrectly after a repair. Electrical systems slowly died (eventually I had to have my passengers wave arms out windows to indicate)! Quote
